Fare Well

by Paul Gillis

The first performance I caught in the 2008 Fringe was a solo dance piece by Maida Withers, well-known as a choreographer, dancer & professor of dance at GW. Called "Fare Well--the End of the World as We Know It!", It featured poetry (by David McAleavey, read by Withers), music created live by Steve Hilmy, and video projections by Ayo Okunseinde.

The performance was in the Forum, downstairs in the new Harman Center of the Shakespeare Theatre Company. The video projection covered a very large area in the relatively small space, and featured many arresting images, often based on scenes in nature. Combined with the powerful music (electronic, not easily categorized in any genre) and Wither's strikingly stylized dancing, it made for a very engaging work.

The main thrust of the piece seemed to be a meditation on how people are changing the natural environment, making it ever more extreme and inhospitable. Many of the video images were of fire or ice.

As of this posting, there is still one more performance scheduled, on Saturday the 19th at 6:00. If you would like to see more pictures of "Fare Well", click here.
