By Bob MorrisonThe Nature and Purpose of the Universe, presented in the Shop at Fort Fringe by Circle of Fools, lampoons ordinary family and Roman Catholic values with a talented cast and simple staging as it tells the tale of a family far beyond disfunctional. I found the script, however, not quite up to the level of the cast and crew – leaving me vaguely annoyed. Come to think of it, maybe that’s the reaction it’s aiming for.

Tanera Hutz introduces the play’s segments as Ronald, an agent of God

Sarah Melinda has the role of Mom, a punching bag for the remainder of the cast.

Her family: Philip Baedecker as Steve Mann, disengaged father; angry parent-abusing son Donald (Jim Gagne); youngest brother Andy (Genevieve James) who has recently suffered a severed penis,

and gay, gay brother Gary (Steve Lee) with his lavender scarf, here with boyfriend played by Alex Perez.

Aniko Olah, another Agent of God, expertly plays a variety of roles in a pair of red shoes that threatened to steal the show – at least for me.

Perez takes turns as Father Anthony Hemmer and The Pope.
