Yearning to Itch

By Paul Gillis

On Thursday evening I saw "Yearning to Itch--What Waitresses Will Do For Tips" at the Warehouse Beyond. Besides having possibly the longest title in this year's Fringe Festival, this play was notable for its take on the nature of dreaming, and also for its cast of hot actresses. (I can't personally pass judgment on the hotness of the single actor.)

The play begins and ends with this actor sleeping at the front of the small stage. Several actresses enter--I assumed they were entering his dreams. The man rises and joins the ladies, but the scenario they enact in a restaurant keeps stopping and restarting, various aspects of the story & characters changing each time. They discuss these changes among themselves, as if they were collaboratively producing a play.

The main thrust of the story is the man's desire for all of these women, as he propositions all three of them at various times. One actress, dressed as a waitress, frequently reciprocates. The others usually dismiss his interest & insult him. Eventually a fourth actress joins the group, and things get scary for this hapless guy.

They gang up on him, grabbing him & threatening him with castration. But he ends up back on the floor asleep. The women go on talking to each other--so I guess he's still dreaming about them. A very interesting play.

This play will have one more performance, Saturday the 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Warehouse Beyond.
